I've been following the saga of these Chilean miners since the discovery that they were still alive 17 days after the collapse of the mine. When the reports came that they may not be able to be rescued until December I kind of felt that I was suffocating with the idea of being trapped underground for so long....

I am but one of billions that have been tranfixed by this event that occurs every four years: namely the FIFA World Cup. I have intensely followed teams through qualifying rounds, seen my hopes rise and crash with the success and failures of my favorite team. The Gulf Oil Spill has been an unfolding drama since April 20th. First there is the tragic loss of human life and then of course is the domino effect of the envronmental damage which endangers fish, fowl & flora and pollutes pristine beaches, which keeps tourists away, which has a negative impact on economies already ravaged by the worst economic downturn since the Great Depressionof the 1930s, which means trouble for you, me and this chunk of our tiny planet.

In 1988, calypsonian David Rudder of Trinidad & Tobago wrote a song called 'Haiti I'm Sorry'. A strange topic for that time since Haiti did not become a full member of CARICOM until 1999, and final accession was only ratified by the Haitian Parliament on 13 May 2002. Then - President Aristide signed the revised Chaguaramas Treaty on 4 July 2003, and trade between Haiti and the other countries of the region officially began on 1 January 2004, only to be suspended that year and reinstated in 2006.
