1st Sunday of Lent I'm watching an old movie Cabin in the Sky. In it, a good-for-nothing is shot and killed but is given a six month reprieve due to his saintly wife's prayer. If he reforms heaven is his, if he doesn't well... Throughout the.movie agents of heaven and hell try to sway him and the devil is pulling all the stops.
Kind of like the readings at Mass today. The devil in Genesis was successful in his temptations of Adam and Eve and he was sure working Jesus after 40 days in the wilderness. They powerful temptations indeed but each met with stunning rebuke. "One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.” Again it is written, "You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test. Get away, Satan! It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Jesus was able to resist the temptations because he was rooted in the Father. We all undergo temptations and we will experience them on our Lenten journey. Temptations against prayer, against fasting and against works of charity but if we are rooted in our Lord we will resist.
